Itinerary of 3 Days Tour from Fes to Merzouga Desert
Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Azrou – Ziz Valley – Merzouga Sahara [465 km]
- Begin your three-day tour from Fes to Merzouga desert early in the morning. We start by crossing the Middle Atlas Mountains and going to Ifrane, fondly known as the Little Switzerland of Morocco for its picturesque Alpine-like scenery that contrasts beautifully with the Moroccan landscape. Continuing through this unique terrain, we reach the cedar forest of Azrou, where barbary macaques roam freely.
- Next, we journey to Midelt, a charming village famous for its delicious apples. After a leisurely lunch and a stroll through the town, we proceed towards the Erg Chebbi desert. En route, marvel at the stunning Ziz Gorges, renowned for their palm-fringed valleys, rugged mountains, and ancient Kasbahs. Upon arrival at Erg Chebbi in the evening, indulge in a delightful dinner at a traditional riad or local Kasbah, soaking in the tranquil desert atmosphere.
Day 2: Merzouga Desert Exploration [80 km]
- On the second day of our three-day tour from Fes to Merzouga desert, we rise early to witness the breathtaking beauty of a desert sunrise and experience the serene silence of the Sahara. After returning to the camp for breakfast and a refreshing shower, we ride camels back to the departure point.
- We then go on a Merzouga desert tour, exploring the fascinating sights around the Erg Chebbi dunes. Highlights include visiting the seasonal Lake of Merzouga, known as Lake Sirji, and the Khamlia village, renowned for its captivating GNAWA music. We also see the local mines to discover a variety of stones called “Mefes” before concluding our day with a visit to nomad families.
- In the afternoon, enjoy free time before spending the night at a local hotel/riad in the Merzouga desert.
Day 3: Merzouga Desert to Fes [465 km]
- Bid farewell to the desert on the final day of our tour as we journey back to Fes. En route, we visit the bustling Rissani Market, the largest souk in the area, and Erfoud, known for its marble stone carving and fossil craftsmanship. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the Ziz Valley and palm groves as we make our way to Midelt, renowned for its apple production.
- Take a lunch break in Midelt or the nearby town of Zaida before continuing our journey back to Fes via the Azrou cedar forest. Arrive in Fes around 6 p.m., and our three-day tour from Fes to the Merzouga desert concludes with a drop-off at your accommodation.
